911 - Emergency 6.8.08

911

James 1.2-4

“Consider it pure joy my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds…”

Every trial is a test.

“…the testing of your faith…”

Every test develops perseverance
“..the testing of your faith develops perseverance. And perseverance must finish it’s work…”

“Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord's coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop and how patient he is for the autumn and spring rains. You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord's coming is near… As you know, we consider blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job's perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.” James 5.7-8, 11

Every persevering step leads to spiritual maturity
“...so you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”

It Matters

SCREEN OUTLINE

It Matters
James 1:22-25

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.
James 1:22

We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. The man who says, "I know him," but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
I John 2:3-4

…be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you; for if you practice these things, you will never stumble. 2 Peter 1:10

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.” Matthew 7:21

Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. James 1:23-24

But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it – he will be blessed in what he does. James 1: 25

CRAIG’S MSS

It Matters
James 1.22-25

I want you to take your Bible and open it up to the book of James. I’m glad to have a chance to challenge these graduating students. Last week I was with my nephew who graduated from High School and will be attending college, and we are all so proud of him. I also have a niece that graduated from college this spring also and she has a passion for God and ministry and we are very proud of her also. And today I want to share my heart with you, graduates. But today I’m also talking to everyone of us here today, with a word from God today. Take you Bibles and open them up to the book of James.

James is a great book. It’s small, but its power packed. James, who wrote this tiny book, was actually one of the brothers of Jesus. He was a religious man, who was raised in the Jewish traditions but early on was not a believer in Christ. In fact, we have at least two places in the scriptures where we read that members of his own family of Jesus didn’t accept Jesus’ claims to be the Son of God. (JN 7.1-5; Mark 3.31-35) But after Jesus rose from the dead, he appeared to James (I COR 15.7). And from that moment, James became a devoted follower of Jesus and emerged as one of the most powerful leaders in the early church. Paul called James a “pillar” in the early church (Gal 2.9). And when a major dispute arose and threatened to split the early church, we see James leading out, brining consensus and resolving the matter.(Acts 15). While the Bible doesn’t speak about his death, tradition tells us that James was so hated by the Jewish religious leaders in Jerusalem because of his witness of Christ, that they threw him off the temple and beat to death with clubs until he died. But James was known as a godly man. He was a powerful leader. He was a man of conviction. He was a man of prayer. In fact, it was said of James that he prayed so much he had “camel knees”.

And James wrote this letter primarily to the Jewish believers in the early church. Chapter one makes it clear, “James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, tot the twelve tribes scattered among the nations.” James 1.1 The “twelve tribes” is a reference to Jewish people who had been scattered all over the Roman empire. These new Jewish converts to Christianity had responded to the gospel, but they were still having problems. They were having problems in their personal lives and in their church. Some people were going through really difficulties and were struggling on how to respond to them. Others were facing conflict in the church and people’s words were causes rifts and divisions. Some were even drifting back into a lifestyle that was godless, wayward and disobedient. And so James fires off this little letter to tell them how to live, how to walk as a follower of Jesus.

The Greater Vision requires a shift in our thinking.

Shift from ___________________ to _____________________.

Shift from _______________ to _________________________.

SCREEN OUTLINE

THE GREATER VISION
Luke 5:1-11

1 One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, [a]with the people crowding around him and listening to the word of God, 2 he saw at the water's edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. 3 He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.
4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into deep water, and let down[b] the nets for a catch."
5 Simon answered, "Master, we've worked hard all night and haven't caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets."
6 When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. 7 So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.
8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus' knees and said, "Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!" 9 For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon's partners.
Then Jesus said to Simon, "Don't be afraid; from now on you will catch men." 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.

Shift from possessions to people.

Shift from temporary to eternal.

Shift from comfort to cause.

THE GREATER VISION
Luke 5.1-11

My experience climbing, got to the top, thought it was the summit, it wasn’t – false summit.

Interview teenagers

Read text

Easy to settle for lesser things
Loose sight of the big picture

Jesus story – retell

I’ve got a bigger picture in mind for your life than just catching fish
Instead of pouring your life out of a few dollars, how about pour your life out for a few destinies!

Underneath this story – critical theme – are you chasing after big fish or small fish.
Are you going to throw your one and only life into pursuing a small vision, or are you willing to take the risk, toss your net out in anticipation of capturing something that is bigger than you?

Peter – life as he knew it, all about fishing, Jesus set his hair on fire for a greater vision.

Chuck Colson – encounter with one man whose life was changed. That one moment validate his time on this planet.

False Summits –
My experience climbing, got to the top, thought it was the summit, it wasn’t – false summit.

The shift – there is a shift that takes place when you begin to move from small fish to big fish. Shift from chasing false summits to the real summit! Hard shift – disciples meant an entire life change.

Couple moved to china – did business over seas

What does Greater Vision living look like?

from possessions to people
Jesus’ love for people – all kinds of people – Pharisees didn’t get it, missing the heart for people.
Jesus people – greater vision people – shift to people priority. People matter to God.
Imagine God using you to help someone live abundantly today and land in heaven tomorrow.

Story about Dave from OKC

Once you have landed a few big fish, you loose your taste for the small ones!
What could be more important that helping someone come to Christ? What could be more important than seeing someone freshly redeemed come to know Jesus?

When you are focused on small fish – settle for just living for yourself, what makes you happy. Selfish people are never happy? When you life is all wrapped up in your world, your wants, your ...

Mother's Day 2008 - A Heart Like Mary

SCREEN OUTLINE
THE BETTER CHOICE
Luke 10:38-42

[play ANITA RENFRO video]

As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!"
"Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:38-42

Six unrealistic expectations that can throw us into a meltdown.

•	There should not be any limits to what I can do.
•	I have the capacity to help everyone.
•	I am the only person available to help.
•	I just never make a mistake.
•	I have the ability to change another person.
•	I can do it on my own.

“Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things!” (v41)

“…only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better…” (v42)

“One thing I ask of the LORD, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple.” Psalm 27:4

[For my determined purpose is] that I may know Him [that I may progressively become more deeply and intimately acquainted with Him, perceiving and recognizing and understanding the wonders of His Person more strongly and more clearly], and that I may in that same way come to know the power outflowing from His resurrection [which it exerts over believers], and that I may so share His sufferings as to be continually transformed [in spirit into His likeness even] to His death, [in the hope]
Philippians 3:10 AMP

The one thing Martha was missing was intimacy with Jesus.

THE BETTER CHOICE
Choose to be still before God.
Choose to listen.
Choose to cast your cares on Jesus.
Choose to worship.

MARTHA’S MELTDOWN
Carol Travilla, in her book “Caring without Wearing”, lists six unrealistic expectations that can throw us into a meltdown.

There should not be any _______________to what I can do.
I have the capacity to help ___________________.
I am the ________________ person available to help.
I just never make a ___________________________.
I have the ability to ____________________ another person.
I can do it on my ______________________.

THE ONE THING
The one thing that Paul had, David had, Mary had, but Martha was missing was ________________with Jesus!

THE BETTER CHOICE
Let me suggest four things to build into your day, before the day gets going. Before your family rises, before you feel the pace pick up, make a better choice. Make these four choices.

Choose to be _________________before God.
Choose to _________________________.
Choose to _______________________________on Jesus.
Choose to ______________________________.

Happy Mother’s Day to everyone. It’s a day we also honor the godly women in our lives and say “Thank you” to them. You know, mom’s are busy people. I mean, they accomplish more than more in a morning than most guy do in a week! It’s amazing. And no one understands this better than Anita Renfro. Anita is a 44 year old mom that lives with her husband John and her two kids in the suburbs of Atlanta. Many of you have heard of her. She is a Christian comedian, and she made a list of the things that a mom says to her kids in any given day and put those phrases into a song. She performed the song at the Dozier Center for the Performing Arts in Kennesaw, Georgia. And last year before Mother’s Day, at the request of her kids, she put the clip of that song on You Tube ...

Grace Giving

PRINT OUTLINE
GRACE GIVING
2 Corinthians 8:1-8

Why Give?
We live in uncertain times. With changes occurring at every level: political, economic, global – why would anyone consider giving generously? Paul introduces us to a group of believers that gave even in the most difficult of circumstances and tells us why they chose to give.

Give out of ________________________.
And now, brothers, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian churches. Out of the most severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. 2 Corinthians 8:1-2

Give to ___________ ________ ________.
For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the saints. 2 Corinthians 8:3-4

Give to be in the __________ ____ ________ ________.
And they did not do as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then to us in keeping with God's will. 2 Corinthians 8:5

PAUL’S CHALLENGE
But just as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us—see that you also excel in this grace of giving. I am not commanding you, but I want to test the sincerity of your love by comparing it with the earnestness of others. 2 Corinthians 8:7-8

Review:
God is the owner, we are managers
We are accountable to God for what we do with what we have
We can either live with an open hand or a clinched fist

Last week I said that fear is one of the greatest hindrances to giving. Third servant said, “I was afraid” We are living in Uncertain times:

•	Economic uncertainty – recession, forecast, looking at 401K, retirement
•	National uncertainty - Presidential election
•	Global uncertainty – war in Iraq, value of the dollar overseas

You have felt these effects in your business (talked with two small business owners this week, trying to stay afloat) We have even felt that in funding our ministry budget here.

Some might say that this is the worst time for anyone try to build. People want to circle the wagons, hoard their money. Why would anyone give in that kind of uncertainty? Why would anyone be generous?

I want to show you a group of people who not only lived in uncertain times, but chose to give in uncertain times. 2 COR 8.1-8

THE BIG GIVE
Matthew 25.14-30

You are never more like God than when you give.

A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the LORD; it is holy to the LORD. Leviticus 27.30

Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Corinthians 9.7

THE OPEN HANDED APPROACH

His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!’ Matthew 25.21

So I was afraid and went out and hid your talent in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.' (Matthew 25.24-25)

A clinched fist approach always leads to regret.

CRAIG’S OUTLINE
THE BIG GIVE
Matthew 25.14-30

Turn to Matthew 25.14 – parable of the talents – review what we have already learned:

1.	God is the owner, we are the manager – when we start thinking as managers, we look at life and money differently.

2.	Because God is the owner and we are the managers – we must give an account to God for what we did with what he has put in our hands. We are only accountable for what we have – but we are accountable for what we do with what we have. God’s three question: How did you manage what I gave you? How did you invest what I gave you? And how did you give back what I gave you?

3.	What I want to do today is take the story a little further. And focus on that last question: how did you give back what I gave you. Because the story ends with a big give. Kids have been putting this parable to use – later today going to give what they have earned. So today is the big give for them! I wanted you to hear this story from a kids perspective – watch this! (VIDEO)

GIVING BIG IS A BIG DEAL TO GOD
The business owner left three servants in charge of his money, and when he came back he had responded to how they had managed what he put in their hands. And at the end of the story there is a big give – where they put it all back in the Master’s hands. Giving is a big deal to God! So many passages talking about giving. But the more I read the Bible, and the more I walk with God I have come to believe this next principle.

You are never more like God than when you give

God is a giving God.
John 3 .16 “God so loved the world that he gave”
James “Every good and perfect gift come from the Father of lights”
Jesus - “Greater love has no one than this, than he give his life for his friends”

Everything that I have – everything that you have – is because God has given it to us!
And so when we learn to give, we become a little more like him. The more we give ...

GOD’S PIE
Matthew 25.14-19

Welcome back! Turn to Matthew 25.14. We are looking at this great story

Last week we learned the first foundational principle: God is the Owner, I am the Manager. I begin to look at money differently: responsible, opportunities, money is a means, not an end, relinquish control to God – “how do you want me to manage your money?”

Second principle: We all will have to answer to God for how we manage his money.
Think of it this way. If all your money and possessions were a pie, how do you carve it up and where does God fit into the equation?

Video: God’s Pie

There is coming a day when you and I will have to give an account of how you carved up your pie! [have a visual of a piece of pie – carve it up, put it on a plate] Did everybody get their piece and God was ignored? Did you put your hand over your eyes and act like God wasn’t looking?

Let’s look at the story again. Master going on a trip, he gives HIS money, to HIS servants and he entrusts it to them to bring a return until he comes.

Who is who?
Master is Christ – here, gone to heaven, is coming ...

"After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them. The man who had received the five talents brought the other five. 'Master,' he said, 'you entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained five more.'
"His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!'
"The man with the two talents also came. 'Master,' he said, 'you entrusted me with two talents; see, I have gained two more.'

"His master replied, 'You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.
'Take the talent from him and give it to the one who has the ten talents. For everyone who has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him. And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'
